CREVE COEUR (25 News Now) - An Illinois State Police trooper was hospitalized with minor injuries after their vehicle crashed near a local gas station early Wednesday morning.

It happened around 6:45 a.m. at a Freedom Oil Company on North Main Street.

Police say the trooper was responding to an emergency call with their lights and siren activated, when the squad car suddenly hit a puddle of water in the roadway.

The car hydroplaned, left the roadway and struck the sign post. A woman nearby says she heard the ‘loud crash’ and initially thought a semi-truck was involved, given how loud it was.

The trooper was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from the hospital later that day.

Inspectors stayed on scene to clear up debris and make sure the remains of the sign post are not of any hazard to drivers and passersby.
