Two men face charges in connection with an explosion in downtown Asheville on the 4th of July. Chioke Fugate, 23, and Duncan Small, 30, are both charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction and going armed to the terror of the people. Officials say they lit an "improvised explosive device" similar to a pipe bomb and threw it at the former site of the Vance Monument.

A Rutherford County man is facing charges of attempted murder after deputies say he fired a shotgun at them. Authorities say the incident happened Monday night on Byers Road in Forest City. Deputies reportedly responded to a disturbance call and say Michael Keene communicated a threat to a deputy. When additional deputies arrived, authorities say Keene fired a shotgun at them. They returned fire and Keene was arrested. No injuries were reported.

The Buncombe County Schools Superintendent and Associate Superintendent are both retiring. The school system posted the announcement Tuesday on social media announcing Superintendent Tony Baldwin will be retiring on November 1st and Associate Superintendent Susanne Swanger will retire on August 1st. In a statement, Dr. Baldwin said, "our decisions were reached with a significant amount of thought and consideration."
