Woman reports losing $22,500 in scam

SANDUSKY – A 72-year-old Huron woman reported to Erie County Sheriff’s deputies that she lost $22,500 in scam where she was told that she need to pay the money in order get her grandson out of jail.

According to a report from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, the woman told deputes that the scam started when she received a call from a man who claimed to be her grandson’s attorney. The man claimed her grandson was currently being incarcerated for causing a traffic crash and she needed to mail money to the crash victim in effort to have a case dismissed.

The woman told deputies she sent three shipments of $7,500 in cash. She said that she became suspicious after the man called her several more times to request more money.

The report states that the shipments of cash were sent by FedEx or UPS to Boston, Massachusetts or Paterson, New Jersey.
