Six agencies spent more than 10 hours Monday rescuing a 65-year-old Moulton woman who fell from a horse in the Bankhead National Forest and suffered an apparent life-threatening leg injury, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office reported. She was transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.
Lawrence County Chief Deputy Brian Covington said the department received a call about 12:15 p.m. Monday that the rider had suffered a possible fractured hip about three miles into the Borden Creek trail. The rescue operation ended shortly before 11 p.m.
Covington said because the injury was considered life-threatening, a motorized all-terrain vehicle was used with a wheeler stretcher to haul the injured woman out of the forest. The accident occurred about 10 a.m., according to Covington. The trail is 18 miles southwest of Moulton.
He said responding rescue units included Lawrence County Multi Agency Search and Rescue, Moulton Fire Department, Mount Hope volunteer fire department, Colbert County K-9, Alabama Forestry Law Enforcement, and Randall’s Adventure Search and Rescue.
