BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — One Brevard County resident is asking why law enforcement isn't doing more to stop speeding drivers across Central Florida.

“People don’t care about the speed limits,” he said.

Living at the edge of Melbourne and West Melbourne, Michael Weissman says he encounters speeders at all times of the day.

“Sometimes the people are so close they’re passing out from the fumes from my car,” he joked.

Weissman sets his cruise control to the speed limit.

“I’m looking out for myself, it says the speed limit, I’m doing the speed limit,” Weissman said.

But going the speed limit means plenty of drivers on his tail.

He said the simple solution is for police to stop speeders on roads like I-95 and Hollywood Boulevard.

“The cops just have to stop once a day,” he suggested.

A spokesperson for Florida Highway Patrol says they’ve been conducting speed enforcement details, including on I-95, but they also have vacancies and need more troopers to assist with enforcement.

West Melbourne Police say the number speaks for itself. They’ve conducted 527 traffic stops on Hollywood Boulevard so far this year.

“I think the police would make a fortune if they (patrolled more). But nobody is safe here,” Weissman said.
