In Butte County, the city of Oroville kicked off Independence Day with a high-flying festival of its own.
The annual car show and fly-in at the Oroville Municipal Airport was on Monday, and let me tell you, there were a whole lot of folks, of all ages, ready for take-off.
From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 4, there were local pilots, and even CAL FIRE, showing off their planes along with Butte County Sheriff and its helicopter.
Some lucky Oroville residents actually got to go up in the air themselves and see beautiful Butte County from up in the clouds.
One Oroville local decided this year to fly into the event for the very first time.
"At 62, my wife said I could do anything I wanted and I said I wanted to learn how to fly a plane," said Ken Godfrey. Known as the "Sheet Metal Dude," he runs a local sheet metal business in Oroville. "At 64-years-old, I got my pilot license...It gives you a chance to see the world in a different perspective," he said.
Godfrey is happy to be able to take his grandkids, maybe future pilots themselves, up in the air.
