Grand Island residents pick up pieces following overnight tornado

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A tornado swept through overnight Monday in Grand Island causing damage to four homes.

Susan Schimmer’s home on the corner of Schimmer Drive and Stuhr Road being one of the victims to the storm.

“It was pretty shocking,” Schimmer said. “My camper’s the worst because I love my camper, have it fixed up so nice and I think its probably totaled.”

The family’s camper is turned on its side, part of their roof is missing and the garage left in ruins.

Two miles to the northeast, between 50 to 70 trees were destroyed and thrown across Myron Nietfeldt’s farm.

Janel Laub had been farming on Nietfeldt’s land for 22 years. Monday, she drove up to the property which appeared nothing like it had before.

“Lots of tears and sick to our stomach and wanted to make sure Myron was safe,” Laub noted.

In addition to the tree damage, three of Nietfeldt’s grain bins, and two other structures on the property were taken out by the tornado, and it’s made for a long day of clean up.

“We have lots of people, different friends that’ve come over with chainsaws and so, just working like little busy bees trying to get things so Myron could just get into his house,” Laub said.

Moving forward, both Schimmer and Laub said they were going to take the clean up one step at a time.
