Family and friends are still coming to terms with the death of David Hammer, who was elected Tuesday to be the new district attorney for Pottawatomie and Lincoln counties. His family has not revealed the cause of death as of Monday afternoon.

Hammer's friends and family described the district attorney-elect as a tireless worker committed to helping victims.

"I think they're pretty much in shock. I've seen them, but they didn't have a whole lot to say. I just think it's really surprising," Laura Willis, who was Hammer's friend, said.

Hammer was 47.

"He was very passionate about what he was doing, and that's really what I think drove most people to him," Pottawatomie County Republican Party Chair Alan Rogers said.

"It took a lot of talking him into evening running for the DA," Willis said. "Not because he didn't want to make a difference, but because he wanted the best man for the job. and he wanted to make sure that was something he was going to be able to do."

Willis said the former Shawnee officer took the same approach to his daily work as an attorney.

"The man worked all the time, and there wasn't a job too small for him," Willis said. "Someone called him, came by his house and needed something, then everything stopped, and he took care of that first."

That commitment extended beyond his work and to his family. Hammer had five children.

"And he was so proud. His kids were hard workers, and they had big hearts," Willis said. "I think his love starts because he loved his family so much."
