GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Stuhr Museum held a grand celebration on Sunday, which was completely free to the public thanks to a grant given buy the Greater Grand Island Community Foundation.

According to a Stuhr employee, there were around 800 people that showed up to the festivities.

Not only were they celebrating the Fourth of July, but also the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Grand Island.

“150 years ago the pioneers who came here incorporated the city,” said Mayor of Grand Island Roger Steele. “You started out with about 1,000 people and in the course of about six generations we’re now at 53,000 people.”

There was a parade at Railroad Town, a cherry pie eating contest and even some races for the kids.

Mayor Steele mentioned that Grand Island and Nebraska’s heritage is alive and well.

“You know I think Grand Island’s going continue to prosper and thrive if we keep the spirit of the Fourth of July in our minds that we’re a nation that celebrates our equality under the law and we’re a city that celebrates our pioneer heritage,” Steele said.
