Firework safety tips ahead of Fourth of July
With the Fourth of July around the corner, Bernalillo County Fire Rescue is reminding people how to be safe while handling fireworks.
According to BCFR safety starts with purchasing legal fireworks.
Legal fireworks can be purchased at any firework stand in Bernalillo County.
If you have fireworks and you aren't sure if they are legal check the label.
Legal fireworks will say "Caution" instead of "Warning."
It's also recommended to stand at least 15 feet away from the fireworks while lighting them and have a water source or bucket in case you need to put one out.
If you have animals BCFR recommends it’s best to leave them inside, as many go missing during the Fourth of July because of the loud noise.
The place in which you light fireworks is also important, especially this year since we are in a drought. Deputy Chief Zach Lardy says it’s best to stay away from dry areas.
“We are in a significant drought this year. Luckily, we have got some rain recently, but we are not resting on that as the fix to the problem. We still could have a fire that spreads and we still could easily structures involved, we just don't want to see that happen in our community,” said Deputy Chief Lardy.
This year according to BCFR one home has already sustained damage because of a firework.
