Bullpen collapse sends RubberDucks to extra-inning loss to SeaWolves

Akron Beacon Journal

SeaWolves 6, RubberDucks 4 (10)

The bullpen blew another lead and wasted a dominant outing from starter Gavin Williams in a road loss in extra innings road loss to the Erie SeaWolves on Sunday in the series finale.

Williams breezed through a career-long 6⅔ innings and gave up one unearned run on just four hits and struck out six. Reliever Brett Daniels made quick work of the seventh and eighth innings and the Ducks held a 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth.

Rehabbing right-hander Carlos Vargas tried to close the door but struggled with command after allowing a leadoff triple, walking one, uncorking a wild pitch and hitting a batter to load the bases. A two-out single tied the score and sent it to extras when SeaWolves (42-32) designated hitter Andrew Lipcius led off with a walk-off two-run home run off reliever Thomas Ponticelli.

George Valera and Micah Pries stayed hot for the Ducks (42-32), combining to go 4-for-9 with three runs, two RBIs and a walk. Pries added a stolen base, his 10th of the year, and Valera ripped his third triple of the season.
