The University of Alabama is imploding Julia Tutwiler Hall, a 13-story dormitory that has housed more than 50,000 women since its opening in 1968. Watch the Fourth of July implosion above.Birmingham-based D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company and Dykon Explosive Demolition Corporation from Bixby, Oklahoma were hired to complete the implosion. The school said about 2,000 holes were drilled and 675 pounds of dynamite was placed in the structural columns of the building. It collapsed in about 20 seconds after the dynamite was detonated. The old building had 13 floors, although there was no 13th floor. Elevators skipped from floor 12 to floor 14 due to superstition. The building’s most recent bed capacity was 1,000. The new, 1,284-bed dorm is scheduled to open in August. It will have a hybrid community-apartment style setup of double-capacity bedrooms, each featuring two twin beds with a shared private bathroom. The building will also have public community spaces with TVs and white boards, outdoor social spaces, laundry rooms on each floor, a fitness area, craft room and large storm shelter.The university said Tutwiler Hall will remain an all-women residence hall that primarily houses freshmen.
