HEAT ADVISORY
This Independence Day is stormy, and hopefully wet, at the start, but will turn into a hot one. The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says a heat advisory is issued, from 1 to 8 this afternoon and evening. Hot temperatures and high humidities will affect us during that period. These conditions can cause heat illness to occur. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
LE MARS INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
A full day and evening of activities are planned for Le Mars’ Independence Day celebration. Judy Bowman of the Plymouth County Historical Museum says this post-covid celebration will include a couple of key features, including a parade and a luncheon. Lunch will be served for a freewill donation, and you can enjoy the meal in comfort.
This is the second time Bowman has organized the parade and luncheon. She says it’s something they want to continue.
Other plans for the celebration include a watermelon feed on museum grounds later in the afternoon. There will be tours of the Museum, and and a Civil War re-enactor will also be on the museum grounds. The day’s events will conclude with the Skyshow fireworks display at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds. You can enjoy the fireworks while listening to KLEM, as the show will be synched to music.
WRONG WAY DRIVER
A Le Mars man was arrested by the Sioux County Sheriffs Department after he was observed traveling north in the southbound lanes of Iowa Highway 60 south of Alton. 58 year old Daniel Hicks was stopped by deputies late Saturday night. He was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Hicks was taken to the Sioux County Jail. He was charged with 2nd offense OWI, driving on the wrong side of a two lane highway, and interference with officers. Orange City Police assisted with the incident.
INJURY ACCIDENT
A car-motorcycle accident in Clay County Sunday sent the two drivers to the hospital with injuries. The Iowa State Patrol says a car driven by 31 year old Sarah Murphy of Springfield, Illinois, pulled into the path of a motorcycle ridden by 39 year old Heather Dillingham of Everly, and struck the bike. Dillingham was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. She was transported to Spencer Hospital, and later flown to another hospital. Murphy was treated at the scene for minor injury. The accident occurred at the intersection of US Highway 18 and a county road two miles east of Dickens..
JULY 4 PICNIC PRICES
An American Farm Bureau Federation survey found consumers will pay an average of $69.68 for standard July Fourth cookout fare, including more costly burgers, buns, potato salad, chips, lemonade, and ice cream. The item that rose in cost the most, ground beef, was up a whopping 36% from last year. It all breaks down to about $7 a person per 10 cookout attendees. Cookout costs are up $10 from last year or 17%, which the federation says is the largest increase since they started tracking data a decade ago. The survey found prices are rising based on the ongoing war in Ukraine, inflation across the consumer landscape, supply chain disruptions and “shrinkflation” due to the pandemic, among other factors.
POTATO SALAD RECALL
Hy-Vee grocery stores are recalling some potato salads due to possible contamination. The voluntary recall of Hy-Vee and Mealtime branded potato salad products was issued Friday. The products were distributed to stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Preliminary tests showed microbes were present in the production line. Final test results identifying the microbes are expected back in seven-to-10 days.
INMATE DIES
A long-serving prison inmate has died at the Iowa State Penitentiary hospice in Fort Madison. Eighty-two-year-old Elvin Gilroy was sent to prison for his involvement in a Minnesota jail escape and a crime spree in 1969. Four men broke out of the Stearns County Minnesota jail, stole a county-owned car, then stole another car as they made their way south. They robbed two grocery stores and a gas station, killing store manager Melvin Bay in Algona. Gilroy didn’t pull the trigger but he was convicted of robbery and murder and given a life sentence.
