For the first time in more than 25 years, there will be a Fourth of July parade in Altoona. It's something residents have been asking for over and over again, year after year.
The biggest challenge the city faced was finding volunteers but that wasn't the case this year. Around 30 people signed up to help usher in the Altoona parade's return. Some of the floats include the fire and police departments and also the city council.
The festivities this year are hosted by the Altoona Area Historical Society and the route is about 1.5 miles.
"It's a great opportunity for us to have that small-town feeling with that parade," Alex Payne, Altoona Area Historical Society, said. "We're trying to tap into that nostalgia with residents who want to feel connected to our community"
At 10 a.m. Monday, the floats will start rolling from the Altoona Public Library. The festivities continue with an ice cream social at Haines Park afterward.
Altoona's population is about 20,000 people but the festivities on the Fourth draw in thousands more with two of the largest firework displays at Adventureland Monday evening and Prairie Meadows Casino Sunday night.
