Appeal deadline, court contracts, overcrowding: What's happening in local government

Nearly all local government offices are closed Monday for Independence Day, and the rest of the week won't see much activity either by local elected officials.

Columbia County is set to approve several court contracts and announced road and lane closures. Harlem has an overcrowding ordinance going for review. Tuesday is the deadline to appeal property tax assessments in Augusta. The Augusta Commission has no meeting while Augusta Planning Commission looks at a mining application.

Harlem to address overcrowding

The city of Harlem has a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday on a code amendment to address residential overcrowding

The proposed amendment cites health and safety concerns and says overcrowding can be defined under a number of fire safety, occupancy, lodging and maintenance codes. It authorizes city staff to investigate complaints of overcrowding and demand compliance. 

Planning Commission reviews rezonings

At its 3 p.m. Wednesday meeting, the Augusta Planning Commission is scheduled to review a rezoning application for a 553-acre site on Camp Josey Road.

Applicant Camp Josey Property Group LLC is asking for the property to be rezoned from agricultural to heavy industrial for the purpose of asphalt and other mining.

Evans Town Center road closures

For Boom in the Park, Columbia County's annual fireworks event Monday, the county will close Antebellum Way from 7 a.m. to midnight. Evans Town Center Boulevard between Ronald Reagan Drive and Antebellum Way will be closed to traffic from 4 p.m. to midnight.

No Augusta Transit, waste pickup Monday

There will be no Augusta Transit or solid waste pickup in Augusta Monday. Garbage, recycling, yard and bulky waste collection will be moved forward one day.

Tuesday deadline to appeal assessments

Tuesday is the deadline to appeal property value assessments mailed in May by the Richmond County Board of Tax Assessors. As of last week, the owners of more than 700 properties had filed appeals.

Columbia County mailed its notices in June 24. Its appeal deadline is Aug. 8.

Lane closure at Bridlewood

Columbia County will close one lane of Bridlewood Trail at Furys Ferry Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday to relocate utilities at the entrance of Bridlewood Subdivision.
