Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke!

The entire Front Range has seen several unrelenting days of high-digit temperatures, including the entire Denver metro. Staying hydrated and keeping cool is the key to staying well, but sometimes that alone isn’t enough. We would like to encourage residents to ensure you know the signs of potentially life-threatening heat-related illnesses and what to do if you’re experiencing symptoms. Together, we can BeatTheHeat!

Heat Exhaustion: heat exhaustion can lead to stroke if no action is taken. Symptoms include: 1) Dizziness, 2) Thirst, 3) Heavy sweating, pale and clammy skin, 4) Nausea or loss of appetite, & 5) Weakness or cramping in arms, legs or stomach.
Act Fast: work to cool the body’s temperature immediately by move to a cooler area, change into light-colored loose clothing, sip cool water with ice, and seek medical help if symptoms don’t improve.

Heat Stroke: Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not rendered.

Symptoms include: 1) Confusion, 2) Dizziness, 3) Heavy sweating, pale and clammy skin, & 4) Fainting/ passing out
Act fast: Call 9-1-1. Work to cool the body’s temperature immediately by calling 9-1-1 and waiting for first responders to arrive, move the person to a cooler area, loosen clothing and remove extra layers, use cool compresses on face and neck, & if conscious, give person cool water with ice to sip.
