The Light Up the Lake fireworks show attracted thousands of people to South Haven Sunday night after the event was canceled in the past two years due to record water levels and the pandemic.

Crews launched the fireworks from the North Pier beginning at about 10:25 p.m. as spectators gathered on the beaches, hilltops and boats to watch the fireworks shine over Lake Michigan. The show lasted about 20 minutes.

"This is one of the better fireworks shows I've ever seen in the state. I'm from Dowagiac, Michigan, and I just brought the family out and have a good time," said beachgoer Chad Swisher. "Just how close you can actually get to the fireworks because it's like they're going right up over your head. You know, it's a big show so it's a good time."

During this year's Fourth of July weekend, safety was a top priority. Security checkpoints were set up throughout the beaches so bags could be inspected. In addition to South Haven Police, sheriff's deputies, tribal police and Michigan State Police patrolled the area.

"It's real nice. You got the Pokagon and the Potawatomi Indians right behind us. Me being a tribal member, it makes me feel a little bit more secure," said Swisher. "You know, MSP is out here helping everybody out and it's just a safe environment, like no issues. We've been out here for about five hours now, so it's going good."

In addition, police did not allow alcohol, drugs and speakers on the beaches. They said they wanted to maintain a safe, family-friendly atmosphere.

Light Up the Lake was canceled in 2020 due to record water levels and was canceled again in 2021 due to the pandemic.
