A 15-year-old girl died and another person was injured Saturday when the side-by-side vehicle they riding in crashed in Grand Isle, local police said.

Grand Isle Police Chief Scooter Resweber declined to confirm the identity of the girl, though she was identified as Reese Rios by her cheerleading coach at Houma Christian School on Facebook and by the Lafourche Gazette, which said she was a native of Cut Off.

Rios was riding in the off-road vehicle with an adult who was her godfather and another child who was a member of her family when the crash occurred at about 2:12 p.m. She died from her injuries soon after.

Another person in the vehicle was seriously injured, but Resweber would not specify which of the two it was. No other vehicles were involved, he said.

Resweber said the vehicle was turning on to the highway when it skidded, though he said further details were not available as the Grand Isle Police Department and state police work to determine the cause.

Resweber said the driver was "bounced around" and "foggy" from the accident, but passed a breathalyzer test.

"It’s a tragic accident," he said.

Resweber said his granddaughter had gotten to know the girl when she visited Grand Isle once and she described her as a fun-loving teenager.

"She was a happy-go-lucky girl, always excited," Resweber said his granddaughter recalled.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the man in the golf cart was a relative of the girl who died. He was her godfather.
