PITTSBURGH, PA (WSAU) — A quality start from Brandon Woodruff led the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-0 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Woodruff went six innings and scattered six Pirate hits while allowing no runs and recording eight strikeouts. Manager Craig Counsell then turned the game over to the bullpen with a familiar combination of Devin Williams and Brad Boxberger earning holds for the 7th and 8th, and Josh Hader nailing down a save in the 9th.
Each reliever allowed just one hit in his inning. Williams struck out three, and Hader fanned two.
Omar Narvaez recorded a two-run home run to lead the offense. Kolten Wong recorded a hit and a run scored.
Despite being shut out Pittsburgh did have their opportunities in the game, leaving a whopping 23 runners on base and going 0-11 with runners in scoring position. Former Brewer Daniel Vogelbach led the Bucs with three hits.
At 46-35, Milwaukee remains in first place in the NL Central and will return home on Monday for an Independence Day game with the Chicago Cubs. Pregame coverage on WSAU will begin at 2:35.
