A 35-year-old man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of trying to steal a tip jar from a coffee shop, authorities said.

The individual approached the drive-thru window of Black Rock Coffee on East Vista Way on Sunday morning and tried to steal the tip jar from the outside counter, said Sgt. Andrew Brumfield of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

“When the employees pulled the jar into the window,” the man “yelled at the employees to give him the money and tried to force the window open to get
to the jar,” Brumfield said. Employees were able to scare him off, he said.

A sheriff’s helicopter arrived and assisted in the search by making several announcements in the area, the sergeant said. Someone reported seeing the suspect near the Vista Library and the helicopter located the suspect walking at Orange Grove and Crescent Drive.

Deputies contacted and detained the man, who had removed his T-shirt in order to change his appearance, authorities said. The T-shirt he allegedly was wearing during the robbery was located and he was identified as a suspect.

The man was arrested and booked on no-bail status into the Vista Detention Facility. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, according to jail records.

There was no loss to the coffee shop, and no one was injured.
