A pedestrian was killed by his own car in Atmore as his vehicle was being towed early Sunday morning.

Ray L. Singleton, 77, was struck and killed after Jimmy E. Barnes drove his 2013 Dodge Ram truck into Singleton’s broken-down car, which was in the process of being towed from the shoulder of the highway around 2:40 a.m. on Sunday.

Singleton, a Fort Deposit man, was killed by the impact of his own car after it was hit by Barnes’s truck, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Barnes, also 77, resides in Panama City.

The crash occurred in Escambia County, about five miles east of Atmore, on U.S. 31 near the 45-mile marker.

Singleton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers with the Highway Patrol Division are investigating the incident.
