The World Games begin in Birmingham on Thursday and some streets are already being closed across the city, according to reports by users on the crowdsourced traffic site Waze.
The street closures began Saturday as planned by a previous announcement from the city. According to the recent reports on Waze, streets are currently closed at these locations in Birmingham:
- Reverend Abraham Woods Junior Blvd, 25th St N, 24th St N, Richard Arrington Jr Blvd N, 9th Ave N, 23rd St N, 22nd St N
- Reverend Abraham Woods Jr Blvd, 7th Ave N, 19th St N, 18th St N, 9th Ave N, Reverend Abraham Woods Junior Blvd, 20th St N, Richard Arrington Jr Blvd N
- 32nd St N, 34th St N, 2nd Ave N

- 17th St S, 16th St S, 9th Ave S, 10th Ave S
While the map shows 17th St. S. closed completely between 10th and 11th Streets South, the road is only partially closed, according to UAB spokesperson Alicia Rohan.
“In reality, this road segment is only partially closed in order to allow employees to access the 16th Street Parking Deck (Zone A-1). We have the below map to help our employees navigate the road closures,” she said.
In an earlier announcement, city officials said street closures would most heavily affect the downtown and Uptown areas, with a security perimeter set up around the World Games Plaza that will include Protective Stadium, the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, Boutwell Auditorium and the new City Walk under the Interstate 20/59 overpass bridge through downtown.
The perimeter will block non-official vehicular traffic, but pedestrians will be free to walk in the zone.
The games will run from July 7-17 and will bring 3,600 to participate in events at 24 venues in Birmingham and Pelham. Fifteen different local law enforcement agencies, including 91 state troopers, will assist with the events.
