The Washington Capitals enter the 2022 NHL Draft with six total picks including a pick in each of the first three rounds, something they didn’t have a year ago.

Things could change after this post if the Caps do make any trades but here’s the round and number the Caps will be picking at.

1st Round: 20th

2nd Round: 46th (from Winnipeg Jets)

3rd Round: 85th

5th Round: 149th

6th Round: 181st

7th Round: 213th

The Caps won’t have a pick in the fourth round as they dealt that pick away at the trade deadline in the Daniel Sprong for Marcus Johansson deal. The Montreal Canadiens are hosting the draft at the Bell Centre and will have the first pick. They are likely to take center Shane Wright or left winger Juraj Slafovsky.

The Arizona Coyotes, as much of a dumpster fire as they are, hold seven of the drafts first 45 picks. You can watch the first round of the NHL Draft on July 7 on ESPN and Rounds 2-7 on July 8 on ESPN plus and NHL Network.

The first round takes place on Thursday at 7 p.m. while the remainder takes place at 11 a.m. eastern the next day. The Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche will pick last in every round.

Last year’s draft wasn’t as exciting as the previous two years as the Caps didn’t have a first round pick, trading it away in that Jakub Vrana for Anthony Mantha. In fact the Caps had to wait till the second round to pick at 55th.

This year the Caps could very well do something at forward with the number 20th pick. Now that they’ll be without Tom Wilson and Nicklas Backstrom for the foreseeable future, it won’t matter whether the team drafts a center or a winger. It’ll help them regardless. Should be interesting.
