'Great to be back': Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular returns to Esplanade for first time in 3 years
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is making its much-anticipated return to the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade on the Fourth of July.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boston Pops have not played their Independence Day show at the Hatch Shell since 2019. The 2020 live show was canceled and last year's event featured a pared-down celebration at Tanglewood in Lenox."It's great to be back," said Pam Picard, who has been producing the show for 20 years. "When we first all came back here, there was a lot of: 'Where do we put this?' and 'How does this go?' But I think we've dusted it off and, weather permitting, we'll be ready."Fireworks barges are now sitting in the Charles River, not far from the Hatch Shell. Matt Shea, vice president of the Atlas PyroVision Entertainment Group, said this year's fireworks display will be epic."This takes the cake. It's a fun event. It's got a lot of history, and that history is being continued with the fireworks display," Shea said. "It's going to be closer this year, a couple of hundred feet closer, a little bit wider. Sort of like a (high-definition) version of a fireworks display."Those who are planning to take in the Fourth of July festivities at the Esplanade should know that unlike in previous years, Sunday's Boston Pops rehearsal for the Fireworks Spectacular is not open to the public.When it comes to Monday's show, state police are reminding spectators that alcohol, drones and backpacks are among the items not allowed at the show.The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular starts with the concert at 8 p.m. Monday, followed by fireworks at 10:30 p.m. The gates outside the Hatch Shell will open to the public at noon.
