One man dead after shooting near Hartford; Suspect killed in police standoff
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - One man is dead and another is in critical condition following a shooting near Hartford Saturday night.
The suspect is also dead, following a standoff at his home in northeast Sioux Falls.
In a news conference Sunday morning, Captain Josh Phillips of the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened around 9:30 Saturday evening at a business near the intersection of 464th Avenue and 261st Street.
Investigators believe the shooting followed a robbery.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found two victims with gunshot wounds. Both men were taken to a Sioux Falls hospital.
One of the victims, a 60-year-old man from Hartford, died at the hospital.
The second victim, a 45-year-old man from Colton, is in critical but stable condition.
The second victim was able to give deputies the name of the shooting suspect.
Sioux Falls Police obtained a search warrant for the home of Glen Nisich, 57 in the 1800 block of East 29th Street North.
Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum said officers and members of the SWAT Team arrived at Nisich’s home around 4:00 Sunday morning. They were able to make contact with Nisich, but he indicated that he was not going to allow the police to execute their search warrant.
With the use of a drone, police were able to see Nisich in the front room of his home. He was armed with a handgun.
During their communication with Nisich, Thum said Nisich told officers he was involved in the incident in Hartford.
Around 6:00 a.m., Nisich fired his weapon at officers outside his home, and in the direction of other homes in the area.
Sioux Falls SWAT officers returned fire and shot Nisich. He died at the scene.
Nisich was the only person inside the home.
Police do not believe anyone else was involved in the Hartford shooting.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation.
