A plan to fly the world's largest American flag on the world's largest flagpole in Maine is moving forward.
Maine lawmakers approved a 16-mile plot of land in Columbia Falls to be annexed.
That land is set to become the home of the Flagpole of Freedom Park where Rob Worcester and his family plan to build the world's largest flagpole.
We have a large piece of property here we're in the Balsam farming business and it's a big tract of land and there's a beautiful high point in the middle of it and we've always talked about maybe creating a destination and the idea we kept coming back to was what if we had the, you know, a giant flagpole in the middle," said Worcester.
According to design renderings for the flagpole, it would reach a height of 1,461 feet; standing taller than the Empire State Building, the Gateway Arch and the Washington Monument.
Along with the largest flagpole, it would hoist the largest American Flag in the nation.
It would also become the only landmark in the U.S. to honor each of the more than 24 million American veterans who have passed.
Worcester said, "I think it's going to be a tremendous and moving experience to see the largest symbol of freedom you know to date in the country."
Worcester's family founded "Wreaths Across America", another non-profit that honors U.S veterans and fallen soldiers.
According to Worcester, the park would generate about 8,000 year-round jobs and $27 million in tax revenue each year.
Building this monument will be a tall order.
Along with environmental and technical concerns surrounding the design plan, $1 billion needs to be raised to make it happen.
Worcester wants to stress this will be privately funded.
They are not trying to compete with nonprofits that surround veterans and actually plan to share their profits with those groups.
"This kind of brings people together gives people an opportunity to learn from what has happened in our history, learn from the sacrifices of veterans and kind of respect for what has happened I think it will bring people around and kind of unite people a little bit," said Worcester.
