BALTIMORE — An overnight shooting sent three women to the hospital Saturday night in East Baltimore.
Around 11:52 p.m., officers responded to the 2600 block of Mura Street to investigate a shooting.
"I was literally in my house when the shooting occurred, I thought it was fireworks," said Leon Copeland III.
Fireworks or gun shots, for many people in Baltimore its hard to tell the difference.
"You know we're in Baltimore so we hear commotion of the police unfortunately all the time," said Copeland.
When police arrived, they found three women suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.
The women 39, 45 and 62, were shot in their extremities according to police.
They were all taken to an area hospital and are expected to recover.
However, the violence didn't end there.
"Unfortunately, after that it was like an additional shooting maybe a day or two later," said Copeland.
The next day, just before 1:30 in the afternoon, police responded to that same block this time near the corner of North Luzerne Avenue after a man had been shot several times. Copeland says he heard the shots that injured the man.
"When I came in from church I was sitting on the couch and the next thing I hear is at least eight rounds, pop pop pop pop, a pause, pop pop pop and some more shooting," said Copeland.
He then jumped into action to help.
"Immediately I just ran down there and I heard somebody on this block say you know you don’t want to go down there they might come back around the corner, but I just had to go," said Copeland.
"I seen multiple gunshot wounds on him, he had a wound straight through his chest which exited out the back. He had another wound that went through his left arm and another wound that was his lower right ankle," Copeland added.
Copeland says it's his combat life saver training from the military that helped him save the mans life, but he’s hoping he wont have to put those skills to use on his block ever again.
"This is a very high crime area and it’s been like that since I moved here, but it’s been getting gradually a little bit worse. And I’m just hoping that stops and goes in complete reverse," Copeland explains.
