CLINTON, N.C. — Six people, including two children, were shot in a Clinton neighborhood Saturday night hours after a man was killed in a shooting less than half a mile away.

Jeffrey Scott Melvin, 35, was found shot to death on 800 Kennedy Street Saturday around 2 a.m. Police said he was approached by a group of people in a vehicle. They called him over to their vehicle, opened fire, and sped away.

Hours later at 9 p.m. just a block away, police said that a black Chrysler 200 drove past a home on the 500 block of Stetson Street where a group of people were gathered outside. People in the car began shooting at the group of people on the street, according to police.

Witnesses told police that the black Chrysler 200 circled the block, drove by the home again, and fired more shots. The group of people in the car then drove away, and so far no arrests have been made, according to the Clinton police.

"Information gathered so far indicates the shooting was targeted and not a random act of violence," the Clinton Police Department said in both releases.

Police have not said whether or not the two shootings were related and did not provide a suspect vehicle description for the Saturday morning shooting.

All victims of Saturday night's mass shooting were in stable condition as of Sunday morning, according to the Clinton Police Department. Because of this, WRAL News is not releasing the names of the victims or the exact address where the shooting occurred.

The victims of Saturday night's shooting ranged in age from 17 months to 61 years old.

The Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group that tracks shootings, defines a mass shooting as any incident in which four or more people are shot, not including the shooter.

Other victims were a 12-year-old boy and adults, ages 23, 36 and 60.
