LAPS News:

An opportunity to work with kids. Same schedule as students. Summer breaks and school holidays off. These are just a few of the reasons to become an Instructional Assistant (IA) at Los Alamos Public Schools.

There are more than 20 IA positions open at all LAPS sites for the 2022-2023 school year. Go to www.laschools.net/careers for more information and to apply.

“I decided to become an IA because I love working with kids,” Sara Hamood said. “It’s my passion. I enjoy being with kids. It’s so great to see them in the morning with beautiful smiles on their faces.”

Suzanna Silva said, “I became an IA after being a stay-at-home mom for nine years. They have the same schedule as the students so I don’t have to worry about paying for a sitter for holidays or summer break.”

Natasja Vermeulen, “As IAs we are in such a unique position to impact a child’s life as they spend a lot of time at school. I truly believe it’s in the little things – the comments we make, the ‘good mornings’ we give with a smile while we pass them in the hallway, and the connection we build little by little.”

Positions are open in preschool through 12th grade. LAPS also is hiring an instructional assistant position in the Computer Lab. Starting pay is $16.05 per hour plus benefit options including:

  • Medical, dental and vision plans
  • Paid PTO
  • Retirement plan (NMERB)
  • Life insurance
  • Enhanced retirement funding
  • YMCA membership
  • Short term & Long term disability
  • Leadership & growth opportunities

“An IA position is a wonderful schedule if you have children in school because you are done when the school day is over,” Ame Mashburn said. “It is also a great job if you are interested in a career as a teacher because you can gain a strong sense of what it takes to run a classroom and with support from your school administrators, you can qualify for college tuition reimbursement.”

Special education instructional assistants are eligible to receive an additional $600 stipend each semester upon completion of training requirements. Likewise, IAs providing specialized support are eligible to receive an additional $1,000 stipend each semester upon completion of training requirements.

IAs interested in making additional pay at the end of the regular school year may apply to work at Safety Town in June or Summer School.
