Authorities ID Lake Lanier drowning victim

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said Sunday afternoon that 48-year-old Frantz Joseph Scutt of Gainesville is the man who drowned Saturday night on Lake Lanier. 

According to officials, Scutt is the first fatality on the state's waterways since the Independence Day Holiday weekend started.

A man has drowned at a residence on Lake Lanier, the first reported drowning on the lake since the start of the holiday weekend.

Game wardens with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources responded to the home in Little River on Lake Lanier around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The unidentified 40-year-old man was pulled out of the water by bystanders, according to Mark McKinnon with the Georgia DNR. 

The victim was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending notification of the family.

Saturday's death is the only drowning reported by the Georgia DNR as of midnight. The latest number show 4 BUIs on Lake Lanier.
