City May Steer Funds To Further Develop Route 66 Attraction At State Fairgrounds

Springfield tourism officials want to steer $875,000 from a state grant to further develop the Route 66 Experience at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

The money would come from a state grant that was provided to the city. Among the attractions to be funded with the money are an LED theater where visitors can sit in repurposed vehicle seats to simulate a drive-in theater, showing movies and information about the legendary highway.

The funding would also be used to develop replicas of vintage billboards and various signage associated with the Mother Road, including recreations of the old “Burma Shave” signs.
