SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A Smithfield police officer who joined in a police chase Saturday night crashed into a truck while speeding through an intersection

WRAL's Breaking News Tracker caught it on camera.

The chase started when the Garner Police Department pursued a driver down U.S. Highway 70 but lost sight of the car before it got to Clayton. Then, a Clayton officer spotted the vehicle and chased it down to Smithfield and lost sight of it, according to authorities.

Later on Saturday night, Smithfield police said they saw a similar car speeding through downtown Smithfield. The silver passenger car sped through a red light, and the patrol officer turned on his blue lights and chased after it.

A K-9 officer in another cruiser turned on her blue lights to join the pursuit. As she was approaching an intersection, she collided with a pick-up truck, authorities said.

Occupants of both cars were shaken up, but there were no injuries requiring hospitalization.

WRAL's Breaking News Tracker reports that the K-9 officer was more concerned about her dog than herself.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. It's unclear if police ever caught the speeding vehicle on Saturday night.
