• Let me get this straight: Former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown cannot vote in the state of Florida because she is a returning felon who has not completed her court-ordered restitution in money. However, she can legally run for Congress again and conceivably hold a position in the U.S. House of Representatives. I need to resurrect my Logic 101 textbook to figure out how this is possible.

• What amazed me most about the Jan. 6 hearing I just watched was the character of the two women whom Donald Trump claims generated 100,000 fake Georgia votes to defeat his re-election. Clearly Trump, Giuliani and Fox News — plus our own Kat Cammack — are too incompetent to outwit two gentle and caring women with no special power beyond honesty and loyalty to their community.

• I’m curious as to why in Marion County their fire protection fees were ruled unconstitutional and they have to refund all the money they collected, while in Alachua County they’re still collecting these fees to the tune of $16.3 million a year. And in my neighborhood ... I’m paying for nothing since there is no water lines or fire protection, no fire hydrants.

• If Donald Shepherd were to win the election for mayor of Gainesville, would commission meetings have to be held in Bo Diddley Plaza since he’s not allowed in City Hall?

• The Supreme Court has taken away one more right from women. Where will it end?

• Back in 2013, Ruth Bader Ginsberg said that Roe v. Wade was a faulty decision which left it open to overturning. Read what she said. She was right — it should have been done properly and this would not have happened, but it was rushed and pushed inappropriately, and there we go.

• Don’t just blame the Republican-controlled Supreme Court. The Senate recently voted to codify Roe v. Wade, but not one Republican voted for it. None.

• I believe the cost of gasoline and fuel is one of the top two issues of the American public. I was very happy to hear that this morning the White House met with eight different industry leaders in the petrochemical field. Sadly, our president didn’t find time to go. I guess he’s quite busy. I guess the good news is that this afternoon at 3:30, on Thursday, we have a meeting at the White House with both wind energy people and also solar. ... This time the president says he has found time to make that. That’s great, but I wish he had been at the former one.

• When the Army deployed us to Europe over 50 years ago, I made several immediate observations. No. 1, gas prices were three to four times what we paid in the U.S. No. 2, huge pickup trucks—– or pickup trucks of any size, for that matter — were never, ever used for personal or family transportation. They were only used in occupations that needed to haul stuff. No. 3, high-speed, very efficient trains for long-distance travel were everywhere. In the five decades since ... nothing has changed. The United States still wants cheap gas, refuses to drive efficient vehicles that will serve their needs just fine and we pretty much have no long-distance trains available for most parts of this country.
