Henry Bishop is not your average 17-year-old.
The Fremont native took home gold and bronze medals during June's U.S. Special Olympics in Orlando, Florida.
Bishop was one of 35 athletes and four swimmers representing Nebraska during the games. He won gold in the 200 meter freestyle, bronze in the 4x50 meter relay and finished seventh in the 100 meter freestyle.
The rising senior, who attends Fremont High School, swims for the Fremont Special Olympics team while also competing in Unified Bowling and Unified Track and Field at school.
Bishop was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, a form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, between the ages of two and three. He wants others with special needs to know they can be Olympic champions just like him.
“If you really want to achieve something like this then go for it before you miss your chance," Bishop said. "Like Eminem said, 'If you had one chance to have everything, would you take it?'"
