After June proved to be the deadliest month of the year so far in Baltimore City, July is not starting off on a better note.
Just two days into the month, and two people have already been killed.
Overnight three people were shot within the span of two hours and one of them died.
Friday police say a 14-year-old boy was shot off Erdman Avenue and Sinclair Lane.
Historically the summer months have been some of the deadliest for Baltimore, and with a long hot holiday weekend, city officials insist they have a plan in place.
“There’s always changes every day,” said Mayor Brandon Scott.
We pressed Mayor Brandon Scott, today, if any changes have been made to his crime plan following the violent month and in anticipation of the hundreds gathering at the harbor for the fourth of July.
“Our officers look at data, our department looks at data, and we adjust based on that data, based on everything from time of day, calls all that, and we’ll continue to do that,” he said.
According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison, the department is focused on deployment with each of the nine districts having its own plan, as well as added patrols and help from outside agencies.
Recent violence including shootings in Fells Point and the Inner Harbor have shown police aren’t always a deterrent.
Those shootings happened within steps of officers.
We questioned the commissioner on his confidence in his plan Friday.
“In many of those cases, what I want people to know is we were right there to apprehend them so we can hold people accountable. We have a robust deployment strategy in downtown every night this week through the 4th,” Commissioner Michael Harrison said.
We have a robust strategy all across the city. We’ll be looking for people firing off fireworks, shooting guns into the air, and we’ll be taking swift action.”
