Opinion: Banning abortions with a few exceptions is a reasonable compromise

Dave Herbert, 84, of Centerville, waves to people honking as he stands in E. Stroop in Kettering near the Women’s Med Center in Kettering Friday, June 24, 2022. He’s been coming here for 15-20 years. On the falling of Roe v Wade, he said, “ Now I hope states ban abortion at any stage. “

First, I want to state emphatically that I am pro-life and glad that the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. That said, I think that politicians, pro-life and pro-choice people always have a tendency to overreact when a decision comes down from the court.

I think abortion should be legal in all 50 states in the case of incest, rape and to protect the life of the mother. I also think abortion should be legal when a baby in the womb is obviously deformed or has other serious health problems. There could also be other extenuating circumstances where an abortion might be acceptable.

What I am opposed to is wholesale abortions, which has been the case in the past 49 years. There are many forms of birth control on the market and also the "morning after pill" is legal to prevent pregnancies.

I am also opposed to the use of taxpayer money to pay for a woman to go to another state to get an abortion. If that's allowed, people will just continue to have unprotected sex and figure, if they get pregnant, they can just go to the next state and get an abortion and the taxpayers (or in some cases their company) will pick up the tab. That's unacceptable; we are taxed enough as it is.

Now the reason that we will end up having different laws, in different states, is because politicians – both Democrats and Republicans – always think they have to please the majority of the electorate to get elected, regardless of whether their decisions are right or wrong. Doing what's right is not often their top priority. There's always an excessive amount of hypocrisy going around.

The Catholic church says it's pro-life but continues to give communion to President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (both Catholics). Hillary Clinton just stated women will die as a result of this decision, but what about all those precious babies?

Many won't agree with me, but banning abortions with a few exceptions is a reasonable compromise.
