A new handicap accessible restaurant and bar in Saint Paul is officially open and the people behind the planning of it said it wouldn't be possible without support from the community.
After more than 4 years of planning, construction and gathering donations from the community, the new American legion restaurant and bar is finally complete.
The new building is all handicap accessible. Commander Chuck Shmid said this was a priority not just for their members but for the community.
"I was really surprised when I talked to some younger gentleman that had some kids and they said they were afraid the kids would fall down so it was a multitude of decisions to make it all handicap, not only for the elderly but also for the public who have kids," said Shmid.
The restaurant and bar is one of the only places to grab a bite to eat throughout the week in St. Paul. Chaplain of the Legion Club, Jack McMillon said he hopes people all throughout the state come by to visit.
"We have this building here for people to use and that's what we want, we want people to come in from the community or people just driving through, you don't have to be a member, you can come in, we're always glad to have people come in and see what the club is like," said McMillon.
Though most of the restaurant is done, they're still taking donations for further projects and to help pay off the remaining debt they have from the cost of the renovation.
Construction doesn't just stop at the restaurant but they plan on expanding the back part of the restaurant by adding volleyball courts, a place to play corn hole and a fire pit.
