Nationals pick up 2023 contract options on GM Mike Rizzo, manager Dave Martinez

On Saturday, the Washington Nationals exercised 2023 contract options on general manager and president of baseball operations, Mike Rizzo, and manager Dave Martinez.

Rizzo, 61, has been with the Nationals for 14 years, hired in 2006 as assistant general manager and VP of baseball operations under Jim Bowden.

In 2009, after Bowden stepped down, Rizzo was named GM of the Nationals. Rizzo added president of baseball operations to his duties in 2013.

Rizzo has presided over five playoff berths, four National League East championships and a World Series championship in 2019.

Martinez has been the manager of the Nationals since 2018.

The 57-year-old helped lead the Nationals to a 93-69 record and the franchise's first World Series title in 2019.

The Nationals are 295-330 and 12-5 in the postseason in five-plus seasons under Martinez.

"Mike and Davey have been leading the Washington Nationals for several years and it is only right to continue with them at the forefront," Washington Nationals managing principal owner Mark D. Lerner said Saturday in a press release. "Mike has led us through many different phases of our organization and we believe his work during this current phase will pay off in the end. Davey has done a tremendous job in the clubhouse and in the dugout for five seasons. His continued determination and unwavering support of his players makes us proud. We are lucky to have Mike and Davey leading the way."

The Nationals are currently in last place in the NL East with a record of 29-50, 14 games back of the division-leading New York Mets.
