The Rio Cucharas Inn permanently closed its doors to guests about four years ago, and it's a bummer to see that this eclectic southern Colorado hotel has been sitting empty ever since.

Drone footage showed the abandoned Huerfano County hotel's condition in 2020. While there was quite a bit of trash scattered throughout the property, the unique details of the building are still visible.

Beautiful Kokopelli figures are animals painted on several of the adobe-style walls of the inn.

The artwork added so much character to the resort and was a way of honoring the Native Americans who once lived in the region. And how amazing are those lobby archways?!

During its prime, the Rio Cucharas Inn hosted a slew of celebrations, including weddings. It even had an Olympic-sized indoor pool.

Travelers loved waking up to gorgeous views while staying at the Walsenburg hotel. Comments from past visitors noted what a fun and awesome place to stay this place once was. That being said, other people shared some crazy stories on Reddit, documenting the scandals and crimes that took place at the location.

According to the Pueblo Chieftan, a fire damaged quite a bit of the 59,784 square-foot hotel in April of 1991. Not only were 22 units destroyed due to the blaze, but extreme damage occurred in the kitchen, restaurant, and health spa as well. The fire started in the storage closet and was suspected to be arson, however, no suspects were ever arrested.

The commercial structure was listed for sale in 2021 but has since been taken off the market.

Curious wanderers still stop by to check out the abandoned hotel from time to time. It can be found off of Highway 160, on the right side while heading east. The abandoned inn is just a bit past Lathrop State Park.

Instead of eager travelers fluttering about the hotel's halls, it's now turned into tons of swallows that have taken over, nesting within the building's rafters. Some can be seen flying about in the drone video.
