A male driving a four-wheeler struck a pole holding a crosswalk sign Saturday, July 2, 2022, at 19th Street NE and Gibbs Avenue NE.

CANTON – A man was injured Saturday afternoon when the 4-wheeler he was driving crashed into the pole for a crosswalk sign.

Canton Police, Fire and EMS were called to 19th Street NE at Gibbs Avenue NE about 1:40 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses on scene said the adult male had been speeding through the intersection, and struck the police while attempting a turn.

"They're up here doing wheelies 20 times a day ... and you can hear them coming," a neighbor who lives about a half block from the intersection said.

Crystal McCauley, 34, of Canton, was sitting on her front porch with her husband when the crash occurred.

"He came around the corner real fast and hit the street sign," McCauley said.

The pair ran to the man's side to check on him after the wreck.

"He was bleeding from his head, so we didn't want to move him," McCauley said. "We asked if he was OK, and he said yeah ... he seemed to know where he was for a minute but his eyes closed again and then opened back up."

While the McCauleys were checking on the ATV driver, a white car drove through the area and crashed into a second vehicle.

Neighbors fed up with 4-wheelers and dirt bikes

A resident of 19th Street NE walked over the crash site. "It just irritates me," the neighbor said.

He said ATVs and dirt bikes frequently travel in the area.

McCauley echoed her neighbor's concerns. "Seems like every afternoon around this time, they're out.

The Canton Police were on scene investigating the two crashes, and said they weren't immediately available to comment.
