A huge piece of Vietnam War history is bringing veterans together in Weatherford this weekend.
A museum there just set up a restored helicopter – an iconic “Huey” – used during the war.
“When you’re a crew chief, you’re responsible for that aircraft,” Vietnam vet and helicopter crew chief Tom Wilson said.

Wilson doesn’t just know the UH-1D, he knows the Hueys inside and out.
“You crawled all over the aircraft and checked the bearings, checked the oil levels, made sure nothing was loose,” he said.
In the Vietnam War, he made sure his chopper was always ready to fly. And not only that, he had to protect it as well, as a door gunner. He said he helped rescue soldiers from downed aircraft.
“That’s what took you out and brought you back safely,” he said of the Huey. “You’d get in some tight situations and the helicopter is what got you out.”
So when he found out this bird was given a second chance, in his own college town, he made the trip from Kentucky to see it.

“Of all the places that I would get this message from, it was meant to be, I guess, that it would be in Weatherford,” he said.
Meet the woman who’s responsible for tracking down the Huey and making it look as good as it does. Linda White said she found a man in Weatherford to do the restoration after she found the aircraft in a hangar.
“It went to Vietnam in March of 1967, and it was with D Troop, First Squadron, Tenth Cavalry,” she said.
After she got in touch with the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, her research led her to the D Troop’s website.
"It had a list of their aircraft, so I clicked on that, and I found our tail number for our helicopter,” she said.
And that’s how she found Wilson. Troop D vets met up for dinner in Weatherford Friday after Linda invited them to see the Huey this weekend.

"Their last reunion was in Las Vegas. Weatherford doesn't quite have what Las Vegas has, but I bet we can entertain you for a day,” she said.
But there’s one thing Weatherford does have – this big, shiny piece of history. There’s a dedication ceremony at the Heartland of America Heritage Museum Saturday. All 37 members of the original Troop D will see the Huey. It starts at 5 p.m.
