FIRE THROUGHOUT THE NEWSCAST. BRITTANY: AN EARLY MORNING POLICE CALL-OUT LEFT ONE MAN DEAD. AND NEIGHBORS, ON EDGE. SACRAMENTO POLICE SAY OFFICERS SHOT A 75-YEAR-OLD MAN AS HE WAS ASSAULTING HIS WIFE. IT HAPPENED AROUND 12:30 THIS MORNING, ON GILGUNN WAY NEAR FRUITRIDGE ROAD AND FREEPORT BOULEVARD IN SOUTH SACRAMENTO. OFFICERS SAY THE MAN WAS ARMED WITH TWO KNIVES WHEN THEY FIRST SPOKE WITH HIM. THIS IS ONE KNIFE RECOVERED AT THE SCENE. POLICE SPENT 10 MINUTES TALKING TO HIM BEFORE THEY WENT INTO HIS HOME. KCRA’S ERIN HEFT EXPLAINS THE INVESTIGATION NOW UNDERWAY. ERIN: THIS THE SCENE THIS MORNING NEIGHBORS WOKE TO. >> I GOT UP AND I SAW THAT THERE WAS A POLICE LINE ACROSS FROM MY HOUSE TO THE OTHER HOUSE. ERIN: ROSEMARY LEE MOVING HERE ONLY MONTHS AGO, STARTLED AWAKE LAST NIGHT. >> I WAS JUST LYING IN MY BED WHICH IS NEXT TO THE STREET, MY BEDROOM IS NEXT TO THE STREET, AND I JUST SAW THE LIGHTS FROM A POLICE CRUISER. ERIN: SHE SAYS HER FAMILY CHOSE TO MOVE HERE BECAUSE IT’S A QUIET STREET. >> WE ALWAYS SAY THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IS SO SAFE, NOTHING HAPPENS HERE. ERIN: LEE MOVING FROM CANADA SAYS SHE FINDS THE VIOLENCE ACROSS AMERICA DISTURBING, AND NOW IT’S DOWN HER BLOCK. IT WAS HERE LAST NIGHT THAT SACRAMENTO POLICE SHOT AND KILLED A 75-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO OFFICERS SAY WAS THREATENING TO KILL HIS WIFE. OFFICERS WERE CALLED TO THIS HOME ON GILGUNN WAY JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT, WHERE THEY SAY THEY FOUND A MAN ARMED WITH TWO KNIVES. POLICE SAY THEY BEGAN DE-ESCALATION TECHNIQUES BUT THE MAN BROKE INTO THE BATHROOM WHERE HIS WIFE WAS HIDING AND STARTED TO ASSAULT HER. OFFICERS HEARD SCREAMING AND INTERVENED. ONE OFFICER SHOT THE MAN, WHO LATER WAS TRANSPORTED TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL WHERE HE DIED. POLICE SAY HIS WIFE WHO WAS INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT IS GOING TO BE OK. THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC SAFETY ACCOUNTABILITY AND THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICERS WILL BE PROVIDING OVERSIGHT BY MONITORING THE INVESTIGATION. AND BODY CAMERA FOOTAGE FROM THE INCIDENT WILL BE RELEASED IN THE NEXT 30 DAYS. BRITTANY

One man is dead after Sacramento police shot him while he assaulted his wife in south Sacramento, authorities said.Officers responded to reports of a 75-year-old man armed with two knives threatening to kill his wife in the 5600 block of Gilgunn Way around 12:15 a.m., which is off of Fruitridge Road, the Sacramento Police Department said in a release.The woman had locked herself in a bathroom, according to authorities. Officers were at the scene for over 10 minutes attempting to deescalate the situation when the man entered the bathroom. "The victim was heard screaming as officers entered the residence," police said that's when an officer shot the man. The 75-year-old was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. The woman was not injured and no officers were injured in the shooting, authorities said.Authorities said traffic will be impacted. That will be released to the public within 30 days, authorities said. The Sacramento Police Department encourages any witnesses with information regarding this incident to contact the dispatch center at 916-264-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP (4357). Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
