Sacramento Police officer shoots man that allegedly attempted to abuse wife

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – The Sacramento Police Department tweeted at around 5 a.m. on Saturday that an officer-involved shooting has occurred in the 5600 block of Gilgunn Way.

According to Police, officers responded to a home on Gilgunn Way just before 12:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a 75-year-old man threatening to kill his wife.

Officers said they found that the man had two knives and his wife had locked themselves in a bathroom at the residence.

De-escalation techniques were used for over 10 minutes as a way to disarm the man, according to officers.

Officers said the man did eventually gain access to the bathroom armed with a knife where his wife was and assaulted her.

As officers entered the home they said they could hear the wife screaming and an officer fired their pistol as they confronted the man.

The wife was not injured, according to police, but the man did later die of his injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“This incident is being investigated by the Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and Professional Standards Unit,” The Sacramento Police Department wrote in a press release. “A response and investigation into the incident will also be conducted by the Force Investigation Team. The investigation will focus on policy, tactics, and training as it relates to the use of force. The Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Officers are providing oversight by monitoring the investigation.”
