2 arrested in shooting that killed 2 near McConnell

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Update July 5: Two men were arrested in connection with Saturday’s shooting. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office confirmed Joseph Ponse Jr. and David Baeza were arrested and booked into Sedgwick County Jail.

Baeza was booked on charges of first-degree murder in the commission of a felony, along with several drug charges. Ponse was booked on first-degree murder in the commission of a felony.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office reported getting a call about 5:15 a.m. Saturday, July 2, about a shooting in the 4400 block of South Rock Road. That’s between Derby and McConnell Air Force Base. There, deputies found Baeza on the shoulder of Rock Road with multiple gunshot wounds. The sheriff’s office said he told deputies there were more victims in the area. Deputies then found a man and a woman dead in the backyard of a home in the area.

The sheriff’s office said it believes drugs were involved in this case.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office tells Eyewitness News two people are dead and another is hospitalized after a shooting on S. Rock Rd. between Derby and McConnell Air Force Base. The call came in around 5:15 Saturday morning.

Sgt. Matthew Lynch with the SCSO Investigative Unit says when crews arrived, they found a male victim on the West shoulder of S. Rock Rd. with multiple gunshot wounds, who was alive, conscious, and speaking.

He told officers there were more victims inside of a home in the 4300 block of S. Rock Rd., then EMS took him to Wesley Medical Center.

Inside that house, SCSO says they found 2 more victims--a man and woman, who were both dead.

Sgt. Lynch says units spent Saturday morning working to get a search warrant for the house from the District Attorney’s office, and have deployed K-9 units and drone units to search the wooded areas and fields nearby.

He says S. Rock Rd. will continue to be closed indefinitely Saturday between 44th St. S and MacArthur while crews investigate.

10:29 a.m.--The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting call on S. Rock Rd. between Derby and McConnell Air Force Base, just north of 44th St. S.

Dispatch confirms the shooting call came in around 5:15 Saturday morning.

S. Rock Rd. is closed from MacArthur to 44th St. S.
