JACKSON, MI – Coffee creates community, and Britt Autumn wanted to bring a space like that to the Grass Lake community.
Roaming Goat has been open for almost six years now. The name came from Autumn’s background and her love for goats and traveling, she said.
You’ll find a small, but mighty menu at the Roaming Goat, including a range of pastry items, bagels, salads and other rotating items. However, the breakfast burrito is the biggest hit, Autumn said.
“It feel like you know you’re in a good coffee shop when they have a staple breakfast burrito,” she said.
Naturally, coffee is the biggest seller at the Roaming Goat. They can make any espresso-based drink, hot or iced, as well as lattes, cappuccinos, a flat white and many more, Autumn said.
The Roaming Goat adds its own flavors into simple syrups in house, and then names them all after iconic women, Autumn said. This, she said, includes the most popular, a brown-sugar latte named for Rosie the Riveter, the icon who represents women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II.
“It’s the first of its kind, the first drink we offered and first simple syrup we made,” Autumn said. “We thought Rosie the Riveter was perfect for that. She was the first iconic woman in American history that you see and know.”
The Roaming Goat also has a hazelnut latte named after Clara Estby, an American suffragist known for her walk across the U.S. in 1896.
The café also has a honey cinnamon latte named after Rachel Carson, an American marine biologist, conservationist and author from the 1900′s, as well as a matcha latte dedicated to Marie Curie, a physicist and chemist in the late 1800s who won a Nobel Prize.
Besides the drinks and food, people also wander to the Roaming Goat for its chill environment, Autumn said. They also sell a lot of local vendor merchandise and art inside the café, she said.
“So you can come in while you’re sipping on your coffee and pick up something for you mom for Mother’s Day, or your dad for Father’s Day,” Autumn said.
The Roaming Goat, 115 South Lake St., is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
More information can be found on Roaming Goat’s website and Facebook page.
