Victim Of Fatal Crash Identified
The Sangamon County coroner has identified the victim of a fatal Friday morning crash in Springfield. Coroner Jim Allmon says 30-year-old Elyse Davis of Springfield died of multiple blunt force injuries sustained in that crash. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened around 2:30am Friday in the 800 block of West Monroe.

Springfield Teachers Reject Contract Offer
Springfield teachers have rejected a proposed contract, despite its call for pay raises totaling more than 12 percent over three years. Only about one-third of the Springfield Education Association’s 12-hundred members took part in Tuesday’s ratification vote, but 80-percent of those voters opposed the contract. Union president Aaron Graves says teachers have many concerns, from staffing shortages to special ed needs to safety and security issues. He says the compensation offer might have been adequate if other concerns were addressed, but taken as a whole, the members felt the offer was inadequate.

More Federal Dollars Secured For Railroad Relocation Project
Springfield has landed another round of federal funding for the ongoing railroad relocation project. The nearly $20 million federal RAISE grant will pay for an overpass on North Grand Avenue near Lanphier High School. The effort to consolidate most rail traffic in Springfield on the 10th Street corridor has included the creation of multiple overpasses and underpasses so that cars, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles do not have to directly cross the tracks.

Helping Hands Restoring Day Services For First Time Since Pandemic Began
For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Springfield’s Helping Hands plans to restore day services for the homeless population next month. Such services were suspended back in March of 2020, but are now slated to return on September 1st. Helping Hands says clients will be able to get assistance with basic case management services, including help in obtaining a state ID, birth certificate, or other official records, as well as referrals to other agencies and programs. Day services will be available Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 1pm at the Helping Hands office at 1023 East Washington.
