Happenings around the lakes area, July 3-13

The Detroit Lakes Tribune accepts community calendar items for publication online and, space permitting, in our Wednesday and Sunday print editions. Submissions must be made at least a week in advance of the event date, in writing, to either dltribune@dlnewspapers.com or vgerdes@dlnewspapers.com. Each submission must include the date, time and location of event, and where to go for more information (phone, email and/or website). Also include whether the event is free or paid admission, and how much it costs when applicable.

Free Movie Screening: Cinemagic Cinema 7 at the Washington Square Mall will host a free 10 a.m. screening of "Clifford the Big Red Dog." Open to the public.

Music on the Mountain: Country superstar Jake Owen headlines the 7th Annual Music on the Mountain fundraiser at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area, with special guests John Morgan and George Birge. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the music getting underway at 6:15. Regional food trucks will be available throughout the night. All concert attendees must have a ticket. Music on the Mountain is an all ages event; however, children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. Show will go on rain or shine, so please plan accordingly. This is an outdoor event and the lodge will not be open to the general public. General admission lawn seating only; chairs will not be provided so please bring your own. On-site parking limited; free shuttles will be running back and forth from M State to the Mountain, 5 p.m.-12 a.m. Tickets available at detroitmountain.com .

Knights of Columbus Breakfast: The local Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 am. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. All are welcome.

Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, wildlife-themed movie, "American Eaglel," will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. The bald eagle is one of America’s triumphant comeback stories. Beyond its distinct appearance, most people know little about this remarkable bird. Learn about its natural history and the recent challenges this species faces and what you can do to help. The movie is approximately an hour long; all are welcome.

Library Closed: All Lake Agassiz Regional Library (LARL) branches and LINK sites will be closed in observance of Memorial Day, with regular hours of operation resuming Tuesday, July 5.

Sallie/Melissa Boat Parades: The Lake Melissa/Sallie Associations' Independence Day Boat Parades are scheduled to begin concurrently, at 10:30 a.m. sharp. Boats should meet at the Shoreham "channel" inlet/outlet, then proceed clockwise around the two lakes. About 60 decorated watercraft of all kinds will, be participating. Traveling trophies will be awarded to boats, properties and people for decorations in various categories. Fireworks on the Fourth: The Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce and area businesses are once again teaming up to present a spectacular Independence Day fireworks show, starting at dusk on Little Detroit Lake. Viewing is best from the City Beach, though there are a variety of spots from which to view the free show.

Tuesdays in the Park: Mike Hokanson performs live as part of Detroit Lakes' Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series at 7 p.m. under the City Park Bandshell. Picnic hosted by Fuller Center for Housing starts at 5:30 p.m. Seating is limited, so bring your own blankets or chairs. Admission is a free will donation; all proceeds from the picnic benefit Fuller Center's local housing projects, while donations for the concert go to support the artists.

Fire Department Open House: The Detroit Lakes Fire Department will host an open house at the fire station, 417 Main St. West, from 6 to 7 p.m. Free and open to the public; come see what being a firefighter is all about.

Scavenger Hunt: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 3 p.m. and spend an hour hunting around the library's lawn for some hidden pirate treasure to take home. Free and open to the public, but geared primarily toward children from preschool age on up.

Library Board Meeting: The Detroit Lakes Public Library board meets in the library's main meeting room, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.

Live at the Lodge: The Excelsior Trio will present an evening of live music in the Lodge on Lake Detroit's Fireside Lobby from 5 to 8 p.m., featuring Jay Hershberger (piano), Deb Harris (flute), Russ Peterson (sax) and special guest Sonja Bosca-Harasim (violin). Food Truck Fridays: Hosted by Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary, Food Truck Fridays will take place every Friday through Sept. 2. Detroit Lakes City Park, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Food trucks on site may change; event will be held rain or shine.

Library Summer Concert: The Detroit Lakes Library will be hosting a free concert featuring Blu Kanu at 4 p.m. on the library lawn. The library is located at 1000 Washington Ave.; this event is open to the public, free of charge thanks to funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultulral Heritage Fund.

Northwest Water Carnival: The 86th Annual Northwest Water Carnival gets underway in Detroit Lakes. Today's events include the Citywide Garage Sales, going on all day; the City of Detroit Lakes Water Carnival Kickoff Party and Street Dance in front of Lakeside Tavern starting at 6 p.m., with music by Born Too Late and October Road; and Night Frisbee Golf at the City Park course, starting at 9:30 p.m. Full schedule available online at dljaycees.com .

Northwest Water Carnival: The 86th Annual Northwest Water Carnival continues with the final day of Citywide Garage Sales; the Midsummer Bike Tour starting at 7 a.m. outside the DL Pavilion; the Dangerzone Crazies Crash Course at the City Beach, starting at 8 a.m.; the Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast at the Detroit Lakes-Becker County Airport, 8 a.m.-noon; Stomp That Stigma Remembrance Walk starting outside the Pavilion at 11 a.m.; Sailboat Regatta racing at Holiday Inn Lakefront's public access, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; and the Demolition Derby, 5 p.m. at the Becker County Fairgrounds (gates open at 4 p.m.). Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, wildlife-themed movie, "The Great Yellowstone Thaw, Part 3," will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. It’s summer in Yellowstone, and with soaring temperatures and drought comes an increased risk of wildfires. All the water from the thaw has long since flowed away and a lack of rain since has left the ground tinder dry. Although these fires can cause devastation to huge areas of forest and wildlife, they’re essential for new growth. The movie is approximately 50 minutes long; all are welcome.

Wild Wilderness Adventure: Explore the natural wonders of Tamarac Refuge with a Ranger on a guided one-hour hike (1.4 miles). Meet at the Discovery Center at 3 p.m. for an introduction to the habitats we share. Sturdy shoes, long pants, bug repellant and a water bottle are suggested for this free adventure, as the hike will be over uneven terrain, into the woods. Bring your camera/binoculars as there will be plenty of chances to pause and search for discoveries along the way. Learn how you can give back to nature's habitat. Free and open to the public.

Detroit Lakes Baseball: Come out to Detroit Lakes' Washington Ballpark for a doubleheader featuring the city's new amateur baseball club; they will play Dilworth at 6 p.m. Open to the public.

Northwest Water Carnival: Today's Northwest Water Carnival events include Xtreme Tippy Cup at the City Park, 6 p.m.; Beach Soccer at the City Beach, 6 p.m.; and Water Carnival Trivia at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion, 8 p.m. Full schedule available online at dljaycees.com .

Patriot Assistance Dogs Golf Tournament: The Patriot Assistance Dogs program will host its 10th annual golf tournament fundraiser at Lakeview Golf Course, 24962 County Road 22, Detroit Lakes, from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. Team up with friends or coworkers in support of rescue dogs and veterans living with mental illness by spending an afternoon at the golf course participating in games, a meal, and 18 holes of golf. Cruise DL Night: Come down to Detroit Lakes' Peoples Park (alternate location due to water carnival activities at the City Park) and check out all the cool cars on display from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Free admission; no registration required.

Saturday Critter Tales: Every Saturday, July 2-Sept. 3, join resident volunteer Sandi Wicklund at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge for some fascinating personal stories about wildlife encounters during her many seasons at refuges throughout the country. Learn about wildlife viewing etiquette and find out the best places to view wildlife at Tamararc. All ages welcome. Meet at 1 p.m. by the Tamarack tree in front of the visitor center for this 45 minute program.

Cormorant Area Art Show: The Cormorant Area Art Club will host its annual art show on Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10 at the Cormorant Community Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission; enjoy two rooms full of all kinds of art made by regional artists, with door prizes, refreshments and more. This early literacy experience explores a different theme each week and is a way to encourage young children to enjoy reading; sometimes held outdoors during the summer months, weather permitting.
