After he was ruled ineligible to run for DC attorney general, Ward 5 Councilman Kenyan McDuffie is now taking a shot at an at-large council seat.
7news has confirmed that McDuffie filed for the November election as an independent.
DC's Board of Elections ruled earlier this year that McDuffie did not meet the qualifications to run for attorney general.
Attorney General candidate Bruce Spiva, who filed the challenge with the Board of Elections, said he was gratified but not surprised by the Board’s decision.
McDuffie was widely considered the leading candidate when he was disqualified, leaving the race up for grabs.
Brian Schwalb won the Democratic nomination for attorney general on June 21, with Spiva coming in second place.
7News' Sam Ford called McDuffie who confirmed he is running as an independent for an at-large council seat.
McDuffie said he’s not necessarily running against incumbent Elissa Silverman, because voters get to vote for two of the candidates.
He said voters could vote for Silverman and him, too. That is, if they chose not to vote for Anita Bonds, the Democratic endorsed candidate.
