St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado recorded the second cycle of his career Friday.
Arenado clinched the cycle with a hard ground ball that Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Matt Vierling bobbled before his throw sailed well over first baseman Rhys Hoskins' head. The play was scored a single for Arenado and a throwing error on Vierling that advanced him to second.
Arenado got the hard part out of the way quickly with a first-inning triple off Phillies starter Bailey Falter. He then homered in the third inning and doubled in the sixth, leaving the single for last in the eighth.
The 31-year-old notched the 20th cycle in Cardinals history dating back to 1882, and the team's first since Mark Grudzielanek in 2005. It's also the fifth cycle in the majors this season.
Arenado's first cycle came in 2017 with the Colorado Rockies, a feat he memorably clinched with a walk-off home run. He joins Cardinals icon Ken Boyer and three-time cyclist Adrian Beltre as the only third basemen in MLB history with multiple cycles, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
For the Phillies, this marks the 18th cycle they've surrendered since 1883. It's the third time a player has accomplished the feat at Citizens Bank Park and the second for a visiting player.
Despite Arenado's heroics, the Cardinals lost to Philadelphia 5-3. Cardinals players not named Arenado recorded just three hits, making him the second player in baseball's modern era to hit for the cycle and have more hits than the rest of his team combined, according to Stats By Stats.
