Tanker erupts into fire on Highway 23 near Eureka Springs Friday
TO THE SCENE WHERE IT ALL HAPPENED. WELL, WE CAN STILL FEEL THE HEAT FROM THE FIRE, BUT MOST OVERWHELMING RIGHT NOW IS THIS SMELL. THAT’S BECAUSE THAT £7,000 TANKER TRUCK WAS CARRYING DIESEL. IF WE LOOK, YOU CAN FOLLOW ALONG THE TIRE TRACKS HERE WHERE THAT TRUCK RAN OFF THE ROADWAY ACROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE, CRASHING, GOING UP INTO FLAMES. AND WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING AT RIGHT THERE, JUST SINCE I’VE BEEN TALKING, THAT FIRE HAS REIGNITED ON WHAT’S LEFT OF THAT TANKER TRUCK. HERE ARE PICTURES FROM VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER RODNEY HARPER. MIRACULOUSLY, WE’RE TOLD THE TRUCK DRIVER SURVIVED THE INCIDENT. HARPER TELLS ME SOMEONE KICKED OUT A WINDOW AND PULLED HIM OUT OF THAT TRUCK WHILE IT WAS ON FIRE. TRAFFIC CLOSE TO ONE LANE FOR SEVERAL HOURS AS FAYETTEVILLE CLIFF DE NOB HILL AND OTHER NEARBY FIRE DEPARTMENTS RESPONDED, ALONG WITH MADISON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE. WE TALKED TO A FAMILY WHO WAS ON THEIR WAY TO VISIT THEIR FAMILY AND BERRY VILLE WHEN THEY GOT STUCK IN TRAFFIC. WE’LL BE HERE FOR LIKE ABOUT MORE THAN 30 MINUTES. THE BERRY, WE ARE GOING TO GO VISIT OUR FAMILY HERE. BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON. THE PROPERTY OWNERS OUT HERE ASSESSING THE DAMAGE TO THEIR FENCE. THEY SAY THEIR CATTLE LUCKILY WEREN’T HURT, BUT THEY SAY THIS IS ABOUT THE FOURTH TIME THIS FENCE HAS BEEN DAMAGED FROM A CRASH IN THIS EXACT SPOT OF ROADWAY. THEY SAID THE EPA WILL BE ABLE TO TEST THE WATER AND SOIL IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. ONE MORE THING. I DID WANT TO SHOW YOU THAT THE FIRE GOT SO HOT ON THIS SIDE OF THE ROAD FROM THAT TRUCK THAT IT IGNITED THE TREES ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD. THOSE WENT UP IN FLAMES TO THE FIRE OFFICIALS HERE TELL ME THAT THEY WERE HERE FOR A TOTAL OF 3 HOURS AND THEY COULDN’T PUT WATER ON THE FIRE. THEY JUST HAD TO LET IT BURN ITSELF OUT
